Hades, King of the Underworld was often misunderstood, while many believe the Host of Many himself to be a ruthless, emotionless ruler, he was neither evil nor cruel. Hades was much more complex than most give him credit for. While he was both stern and strict, he was nothing but fair in his duty of judgement and overall rule of the Underworld Kingdom. His devotion to his wife Persephone is another note of interest, granting her title of his Queen and treating her as a complete equal, allowing her to make her own decisions and pass her own judgement in the kingdom they shared and ruled over. Hades also presides over all the precious metals, gems, and resources hidden under the Earth’s surface. In this way, he is associated with wealth and abundance.
We find ourselves intrigued by his duty, personality, and actions as these are commonly what draws us to him, as he highlights the unstoppable passage of time and the intricate balance between light and darkness that we encounter in our own lives. Hades reminds us to look within, to focus on ourselves and our emotions. To be strict with our own self-care but also to be fair and just when mistakes are made, so long as they are recognised and learnt from.
